New compact command for Notes/Domino
Thursday, 11 August 2005 21:23:18 EET

Time to make a better compact command for Domino. As domino's own ncompact.exe can not compact databases with whitespace, orphan agent data and other undocumented stuff, I decided finally to make my own version. It's running under codename "xcompact", and Beta 1 is already working and very impressive. It compacts a 60MB whitespace loaded database in just a few seconds, where Domino's own ncompact can take up to 10 minutes (using the "-C" option for copy-style compaction) for the same database while not even reducing it's size. The database is really compacted to the minimum possible size, and this will make the need to manually copy/move documents and design documents to a new database finally void. Check back for the public Beta 1 release in the coming days.

Be sure that I'll check ya site for the BETA. Will you give the code to IBM ? ;-)

I wonder why IBM has not already done this.

Julie Kadashevich made her own compagnt.exe tool, but that has never been included in ncompact.exe either, although it's publicly available for download from IBM's site. The creation of orphan agent data has never really been fixed in Notes/Domino (yes, some major bug was fixed, but new orphan agent data can still occur, for example when an agent is running and it is resaved while it's running), and thus this "unofficial" tool from Julie should be a must for every serious Domino administrator.

My "xcompact" will fix the orphan data, some undocumented things, and of course the usual whitespace, and it does it very fast.

The Beta 1 testers are needed so I can see if it really works in all circumstances, and make necessary fixes towards the final build if some exceptional blown up databases are reported by the Notes/Domino community.

I'm planning to sell this tool, unless IBM decides to implement the same technologies in their ncompact.exe, but of course for a reasonable price, which will pay itself back very soon due to the vastly improved performance of your Notes/Domino applications.

The R7 tests I just did and showed in my Blog, are also relevant for R5/R6, and thus I am confident that this tool will improve any database performance noticeably.
